Collision in Mumbai/Nhava Sheva
A Panama Registered container ship outbound from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port & AL KHALIJIA-3 collided within the Port limits of Mumbai Port Trust
Dear Valued Customers,

On 7th August 2010 , MSC Chitra, a Panama Registered container ship outbound from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port & AL KHALIJIA-3 , a ST. Kitts & Nevis registered cargo ship, inbound to Mumbai Port Trust collided within the Port limits of Mumbai Port Trust. This has resulted in severe damage to MSC Chitra which has run aground. The salvage operation is going on and approx 400 containers are floating around the Channel.

This have affected the berthing / un berthing traffic of all the vessels in Nhava Sheva and Mumbai Port. Berthing and un berthing of the vessels has suspended until further notice.

Understand from sources that all the port operations would remain close at least till 11th August (wed).
As of date, 8 vessels are waiting to sail, and 19 vessels waiting for berth. Even if the channel is clear, to bring the berthing/unberthing traffic on schedule will take time.

There is possibility of port closing the gate due to congestion as ICD Contr will continuously move in but since the vessels are not berthing to load the contrs, the contrs will get piled up in yard, which will lead to yard congestion.
Above will result in delay on all shipments from both Mumbai/ Nhava Sheva and also Tuticorin / Chennai.

We will keep you posted for further news and updated.
